Chronicle

Kerala is first referenced (as Keralaputra) in a third century-BCE shake inscription left by the Mauryan ruler Ashoka. In the only remaining hundreds of years BCE this district became well known among the Greeks and Romans for its flavors (especially pepper). During the initial five centuries CE the area was a piece of Tamilakam—the region of the Tamils—and in this manner was once in a while partially constrained by the eastern Pandya and Chola lines, just as by the Cheras. Quite a bit of Kerala's history from the sixth to the eighth century is dark, however it is realized that Arab dealers presented Islam later in the period. Under the Kulashekhara line (c. 800–1102), Malayalam rose as a particular language, and Hinduism became noticeable. The time of foreign mediation started in 1498, when Vasco da Gama arrived close Calicut. Their endeavor to build up sway was ruined by the zamorin (innate ruler) of Calicut. Marthanda Varma climbed the Venad position of authority in 1729 and squashed Dutch expansionist structures at the Battle of Kolachel 12 years after the fact. Marthanda Varma then embraced a European method of military order and extended the Venad space to incorporate what turned into the southern territory of Travancore. His union in 1757 with the raja of the focal territory of Cochin (Kochi), against the zamorin, empowered Cochin to endure. Two years after India's freedom was accomplished in 1947, Cochin and Travancore were joined as Travancore-Cochin state. The southern bit of the previous Travancore-Cochin state was connected to Tamil Nadu.
